Gangs, Bridges and Tech, San Francisco is home to all 3

San Francisco is a major city located on the west coast of the United States in the state of California. It is situated on a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay. With a population of over 880,000 people (as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021), San Francisco is the fourth most populous city in California. What a lot of people don’t see in the media is that Gangs play a major role in some of San Francisco’s developing areas. Despite this fact, San Francisco still thrives and it is home to some of the best sceneries in the world.

San Francisco is renowned for its iconic landmarks, cultural diversity, and vibrant atmosphere. Some notable features of the city include:

  1. Golden Gate Bridge: This iconic suspension bridge is one of the most recognized symbols of San Francisco and connects the city to Marin County.
  2. Alcatraz Island: Located in the San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz Island is known for its former high-security federal prison, which housed notorious criminals.
  3. Fisherman’s Wharf: A popular tourist destination, Fisherman’s Wharf is a waterfront neighborhood known for its seafood restaurants, souvenir shops, and scenic views.
  4. Cable Cars: San Francisco’s cable car system is the last manually operated system of its kind in the world. It serves as both a mode of transportation and a tourist attraction.
  5. Chinatown: San Francisco’s Chinatown is the largest Chinatown outside of Asia and is known for its vibrant cultural heritage, authentic cuisine, and bustling streets.
  6. Tech Industry: San Francisco is a global hub for technology and innovation. It is home to numerous tech companies, startups, and venture capital firms.
  7. Cultural Scene: San Francisco has a rich arts and cultural scene, with a variety of theaters, museums, galleries, and music venues. The city hosts events such as the San Francisco International Film Festival and the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival.

San Francisco’s Mission District is home to Gangs as well as some really wealthy people as well.

The Mission District in San Francisco is home to Mark Zuckerberg’s multi million dollar mansion, but it is right around the corner to some serious gangs.

Other Crime filled areas of SF are:

  1. Tenderloin: The Tenderloin neighborhood has faced higher crime rates, particularly related to drug offenses, theft, and assault.
  2. Bayview-Hunters Point: This neighborhood has experienced higher levels of violent crime, including homicides and shootings.
  3. Western Addition: Certain areas within the Western Addition neighborhood, such as the Fillmore District, have historically had higher crime rates, including property crimes and drug-related offenses.

Crime in San Francisco and the leading causes

In San Francisco, some common types of crimes that have been reported in the past include:

  1. Property Crimes: These can include theft, burglary, motor vehicle theft, and vandalism. Property crimes often occur in densely populated areas and can affect both residential and commercial properties.
  2. Drug-related Crimes: San Francisco, like many urban areas, has faced challenges related to drug abuse and drug trafficking. Crimes associated with drug trade and drug possession have been reported.
  3. Assault and Robbery: Incidents involving physical altercations, assaults, and robberies have occurred in certain areas of the city. These crimes can vary in severity, ranging from simple assaults to more serious offenses.
  4. Cybercrime: With the increasing use of technology, cybercrime has become a concern in many cities, including San Francisco. Cybercrimes such as identity theft, online scams, and hacking have been reported.
  5. Domestic Violence: Domestic violence incidents, involving disputes between family or household members, have been reported in San Francisco as well.

How is Drug Distribution Related to the Gangs in SF

Drug-related activities can be connected to gang involvement in San Francisco, as in many other cities. Gangs often engage in the illicit drug trade as a means of generating income and exerting control over specific territories. Here are some ways in which drugs can be related to gangs in San Francisco:

  1. Drug Distribution: Gangs may control the distribution of drugs within their territories. They establish networks and supply chains to traffic and sell illicit substances such as cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and illegal prescription drugs.
  2. Turf Wars: Gangs may engage in conflicts over drug territories, leading to violence and rivalries between different groups. These disputes can result in shootings, assaults, and homicides, posing a significant threat to public safety.
  3. Protection and Enforcement: Gangs may offer protection to drug dealers and users within their communities in exchange for financial contributions or loyalty. They may also enforce their control by engaging in acts of violence against rival gangs or individuals involved in the drug trade.

  5. Recruitment: Drug distribution networks provide an opportunity for gangs to recruit new members, particularly vulnerable individuals who may be enticed by the promise of financial gain or a sense of belonging.

Hispanic Gangs in San Francisco

Mexican Gangs in San Francisco are some of the most active gangs in the area. There is an on going beef that has been going on for decades between the Nortenos and the Surenos.

The Nortenos hold the area rough between Mission Street and Potrero and the Surenos hold the area between Dolores and South Van Ness.

Surenos have allied themselves with a MS-13, which is another dangerous gang which originates in Central America, this has allowed them to gain some extra real estate when it comes to territory.

The beef between the Nortenos and Surenos is so serious that they attack each on on site, and the more hardcore the attack is, the more respect they get from the shot callers and bosses.

Asian Gangs in San Francisco

Hispanic Gangs are not the only types of gangs that are in San Francisco. Asian Gangs have been part of San Franciscos gang history for almost 100 year.

Due to a high population of Chinese immigrants, San Franciscos China Town has been home for numerous asian American street gangs.

Modern day gang wars still happen, but China Town was a different place when immigrants first started flocking here in the earlier 1900s.

The Tong Wars which took place roughly from 1870 to the 2000s was a war Chinese Gangs fought for dominance in the streets of Chinatown.
